Shoot-out in Johannesburg

Twelve people, including four policemen, have been killed in the South African city of Johannesburg during a shootout between armed robbers and the police. The incident began when the authorities tried to halt a robbery at a supermarket in the suburb of Honeydew. Peter Biles is in Johannesburg and has more:

The drama began when a gang of about twenty men robbed a supermarket on the western outskirts of Johannesburg. Police then chased the robbers to a house in Jeppestown close to the city centre. In the ensuing battle a total of twelve people were killed, four of them policemen. The provincial police commissioner, Perumal Naidoo, has paid tribute to his men who died in the shoot-out. The police have made fourteen arrests and investigations are continuing through the night. South Africans are no strangers to violence crime but even by local standards, this has caused alarm. The government admits that levels of crime are still unacceptably high and that the police need to be better trained. Opposition parties say that crime should become a national priority for the authorities.
