One of Australia's most senior tax officials may have unwittingly helped an elaborate tax fraud syndicate. ATO deputy commissioner Michael Cranston will be charged with abusing his position as a public official after his son and daughter were charged with allegedly being part of a crime syndicate that defrauded the tax office of 165 million dollars. Mr Cranston is not believed to be a conspirator.

Australian entertainer Rolf Harris is being released from prison in the UK. Harris is on trial at London's Southwark Crown court, where he has pleaded not guilty to four counts of indecent assault relating to three teenage girls in the 1970s and '80s. The 87 year-old appeared in court via video link from prison.

Police in Perth are looking for a man who fatally stabbed a dog in a suburban park. A young woman was walking her two dogs in Mirrabooka when the man attacked one of them. The dog later died in a veterinary hospital.
