Australia's most senior Catholic, Cardinal George Pell, has addressed the media in Rome after being charged with historical sexual assault offences. He strenuously denies the allegations, and says he will return to Australia to clear his name. Cardinal Pell has been summonsed to appear at the Melbourne magistrates court on the 18th of july.

Former prime minister Tony Abbott has urged the government to consider building nuclear-powered submarines to replace the existing fleet. The government has already awarded the contract for the future submarines to a French company, which will use conventional power. Mr Abbott says nuclear-powered submarines can remain submerged for much longer and are worth considering.

Payne says she was prescribed the substance by a doctor after she had a serious fall last year.
