More than 70 primary school students have been flown to safety and reunited with their families after becoming stranded by floodwaters at a camp in north Queensland, for almost a week. It comes as hundreds of residents survey the damage after days of heavy rain.

Former Tasmanian Liberal MP Tony Benneworth has been identified as one of the victims in a fatal fishing boat accident in northern Tasmania. The 67-year-old was fishing with two other men when their dinghy capsized yesterday afternoon. A rescue helicopter, ambulances and police were dispatched to the scene, but Mr Benneworth and a 73-year-old man did not survive.

The Turnbull government insists no secret military deals have been struck in return for Australia being exempt from Donald Trump's new tariffs on imported steel. The US president has confirmed Australia will be spared from steel and aluminium tariffs but says the two nations are now working on a "security agreement."
