The Chinese government is calling on the United States to stop abusing the concept of national security and to stop suppressing foreign companies.

This comes as Washington is reportedly considering adding Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation to a trade blacklist.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian has condemned the move.

"For a period of time, the U.S. has generalized the concept of national security, abused national power, and imposed various restrictive measures on Chinese companies without providing any real evidence. China firmly opposes such hegemonic moves."

He adds that the move not only violates international trade rules and disrupts the global industrial chain, but also damages the U.S. national interests and image.

SMIC has also issued a statement saying it has not violated any laws.

World Health Organization officials have praised China's achievements in the fight against COVID-19.

Health Emergencies Program director Michael Ryan:

"We congratulate the frontline workers and the communities in China for having reached such a successful outcome."

The WHO official made the remarks after China marked more than two weeks with no local COVID-19 infections. All new cases have been imported.

Johns Hopkins University says global COVID-19 deaths have surpassed 890 thousand.

The university also says there are over 27 million infections worldwide.

The United States remains at the top of the chart in terms of infections and fatalities, accounting for more than 20 percent of global deaths.

India has overtaken Brazil in coronavirus infection numbers after reporting a record single-day jump of more than 90,000 cases.

The country became the second-worst hit by COVID-19 on Monday with a total of more than 4.2 million, behind the United States with 6.2 million.

The surge in COVID-19 cases comes as the Indian government ends most curbs in a bid to resuscitate an economy in deep trouble after a severe lockdown.

The European Commission has been questioned over its plans to develop safe COVID-19 vaccines.

Deputy Director General Sandra Gallina says trust in any future vaccine is paramount, and it must be available in low-income countries.

The European Commission official also says the first doses of a vaccine will be available to E.U. member states by December.

Saudi Arabia's Public Prosecution has issued the final verdicts against eight convicts in the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The prosecution says five were sentenced to 20 years in jail, and three sentenced to between seven and 10 years in jail.

Khashoggi was murdered inside the Saudi consulate in Turkey in October 2018.

A number of top Saudi officials were arrested in connection with the case.

世卫组织官员发表上述讲话时，中国已两周多未出现新冠肺炎本土确诊病例。所有病例均为境外输入。

约翰霍普金斯大学表示，全球新冠肺炎死亡人数已超过89万。

该大学还表示，全球感染人数已超过2700万。

就感染及死亡人数而言，美国仍高居榜首，占全球死亡人数的20%以上。

印度新冠肺炎单日新增确诊病例超过9万例，这使印度的累计感染人数超过巴西。

与此案有关的多名沙特高级官员被逮捕。
