The UK reported more than 1,600 new deaths on Tuesday, becoming the first European country and the fifth globally to surpass 100,000 COVID-19 deaths.

England's Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty says the infection rate remains very high in the UK despite a lockdown that's been in place since January 5th.

"The rates are just about holding with the new variant, with what everybody is doing. Our big worry was that we'd need more to hold it. It's going to be much harder because this new variant and I think we have to be realistic about that."

Official data shows that more than 3.6 million people have tested positive for the coronavirus in the UK since the pandemic started.

So far, more than 6.8 million people have received their first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, with a target of reaching 15 million people by the middle of next month.

The International Monetary Fund has projected that the global economy will grow by 5.5 percent this year, 0.3 percentage points above the October forecast.

IMF Chief Economist Gita Gopinath says the upgrade for 2021 reflects the positive effects of the onset of vaccinations in some countries, as well as additional policy support at the end of last year in economies such as the United States and Japan.

She says China has been very successful in containing the pandemic and that has played a very important role to bring back economic activity.

This year, China is expected to grow by 8.1 percent, and to expand 5.6 percent next year.

Meanwhile, the global economy is projected to grow 4.2 percent in 2022.
