Ethiopian AI Researcher Aims to Increase Inclusion of Black Individuals in Artificial Intelligence

Do you think you were especially targeted or was it especially challenging because you were you are a woman and also a black woman?

Yes definitely because I also spoke up I wasnt just that one who didnt speak up,so there was constant I mean the final thing with me being fired was not out of the blue, there was like a number of things that was that were happening throughout my time at Google,so if I were from a different group I wouldnt have spoken at,but then I also saw people from other groups like my manager who started speaking up and then they also started traveling against them,so even our supporters and allies would get retaliated against for every visible person whose story is out of the public limelight like mine, there are many others whove gone through very similar and even way worse experiences which we cant bring to the limelight, because its difficult to come out about a corporation publicly because you could your life can be rude even more,so I think what people should take away from my story is that first thing you want to do is you want the facts to come to light and the facts cant come to light,if people are theyre such an imbalance of power, people are going to be retaliated against for doing that. And this discourages them from joining tech companies. Its not even being discouraged from joining tech companies when they want to join they have to jump through many hoops,so another recruiter who was fired before me her name is April Curley, shes another black woman, she was a recruiter that was trying to get people from Hbcus Black Universities hired at Google, and she talks about how versus people admitted to giving more difficult interview questions for the people they saw. These are like people who have awards that nobody gets during their graduate school studies, people have best paper awards people have all the most amazing credentials you can imagine, and they would find a way to say oh this person probably should not be hired or this person should go through an extra who, then once youre hired then theres also all of this hostility that people face, so its not about someone being discouraged from doing it or not,its its about an active kind of barrier, barrier from barrier from barrier that is actively placed to prevent people from not just joining, but having a healthy kind of life and work. And now you have your own institution called Distribute Artificial Intelligence Research Institute and you are trying to increase the presence of black individuals in the technology, how specially are you encouraging women to come to the field both in the diaspora or in the African continent?

Diversity and things like that are not just about bringing in certain kinds of people in a specific structure. Its very important to have an interdisciplinary team of researchers not just computer science not just AI or whatever, but so sociologists who study social structures and their importance, people who study tech history and people who do critical analysis of these kind of systems,so when you see the process just like the structure that were in the leadership the way the things we value a lot of women want to join, the expertise that we value right? and the gatekeeping that we dont have a lot of women I want to join,so the makeup of our institute is already I mean were still building it up, its already I mean more than 50 or so women. So you create the opportunity for a woman?46 like yeah so more than actually 70 percent maybe 60 70 percent,so its not like reserved for women but its more than that its not a hostile environment its very simple its really not rocket science. So when the environment is easy women would come.

Its just not a hostile environment its a regular environment where women can live without being sexually harassed, without being interrupted all the time without for each work that they do the man next to them gets recognition, but they dont I mean thats the issue the issue is not that women are not interested in technology, women are plenty interested in technology, its just that they cant survive, because so they have to decide do I do this to myself, like do I live like this, or do I leave and many women leave or dont join.
