Millions of people perished in the inhumane Soviet prison system known as the Gulag.  Criminals and political prisoners alike suffered merciless beatings, forced labor, and endured temperatures of 40 below zero in distant isolation from the rest of the world.  The Gulag disappeared with the collapse of the Soviet Union, but evidence has emerged of renewed prison brutality in today's Russia.  VOA Moscow Correspondent Peter Fedynsky has this report, which contains scenes of disturbing violence.
