He was carefully examining the foolscap, upon which the words were pasted, holding it onlyan inch or two from his eyes.

"Well?"

"Nothing," said he, throwing it down. "It is a blank halfsheet of paper, without even awater-mark upon it. I think we have drawn as much as we can from this curious letter; and now,Sir Henry, has anything else of interest happened to you since you have been in London?"“没有什么, ” 他一面说着一面又扔下了信纸,“这是半张空白信纸, 上边连个水印都没有。 ”

"Why, no, Mr. Holmes. I think not."

"You have not observed anyone follow or watch you?"“您还没有看到过有人注意您的行动或是盯您的梢吗? ”

"I seem to have walked right into the thick of a dime novel," said our visitor. "Why in thundershould anyone follow or watch me?"

"We are coming to that. You have nothing else to report to us before we go into this matter?"“我们就要谈这个问题了。 ”

"Well, it depends upon what you think worth reporting."“噢, 这要看什么事情是你们认为值得讲的了 。”

"I think anything out of the ordinary routine of life well worth reporting."“我认为日常生活里的任何反常的事情都是值得提出来的。”

Sir Henry smiled.

"I don't know much of British life yet, for I have spent nearly all my time in the States and inCanada. But I hope that to lose one of your boots is not part of the ordinary routine of life overhere."

"You have lost one of your boots?"

"My dear sir," cried Dr. Mortimer, "it is only mislaid. You will find it when you return to thehotel. What is the use of troubling Mr. Holmes with trifles of this kind?"“我亲爱的爵士,” 摩梯末医生叫了 起来,“这不过是放错了地方罢了。 ”

"Well, he asked me for anything outside the ordinary routine."“唉, 是他问我除了 日常生活之外还发生过什么事情啊。”
