威廉·福克纳(1897—1962),20世纪最伟大的作家之一,美国“南方文学”派的创始人,也是整个西方最有影响的现代派小说家之一。他的代表作品有《喧哗与骚动》、《八月之光》等。福克纳从小生长在美国南方,年轻时曾在当地邮政局做过一阵不太负责任的局长,后因玩忽职守而被辞退。他游历过许多地方,但最终依然回到美国南方,并且所有的作品都以南方为背景。1949年,因为“他对当代美国小说作出了强有力和艺术上无与伦比的贡献”,福克纳获诺贝尔文学奖。他在斯德哥尔摩发表的获奖感言是诺贝尔文学奖最精彩的感言之一。他捐献了自己获得的奖金,要成立一个基金以支持鼓励文学新人,最后建立了国际笔会/福克纳小说奖。

I feel that this award was not made to me as a man, but to my work — life's work in theagony and sweat of the human spirit, not for glory and least of all for profit, but to create out ofthe materials of the human spirit something which did not exist before. So this award is only minein trust. It will not be difficult to find a dedication for the money part of it commensurate withthe purpose and significance of its origin. But I would like to do the same with the acclaim too, byusing this moment as a pinnacle from which I might be listened to by the young men and womenalready dedicated to the same anguish and travail, among whom is already that one who will someday stand where I am standing.

Our tragedy today is a general and universal physical fear so long sustained by now that wecan even bear it. There are no longer problems of the spirit. There is only the question: When willI be blown up?

Because of this, the young man or woman writing today has forgotten the problems of thehuman heart in conflict with itself which alone can make good writing because only that is worthwriting about, worth the agony and the sweat.

He must learn them again. He must teach himself that the basest of all things is to be afraid;and, teaching himself that, forget it forever, leaving no room in his workshop for anything but theold verities and truths of the heart, the universal truths lacking which any story is ephemeral anddoomed — love and honor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice. Until he does so, helabors under a curse. He writes not of love but of lust, of defeats in which nobody loses anythingof value, of victories without hope and, worst of all, without pity or compassion. His grievesgrieve on no universal bones, leaving no scars. He writes not of the heart but of the glands.

Until he learns these things, he will write as though he stood among and watched the end ofman. I decline to accept the end of man. It is easy enough to say that man is immortal simplybecause he will endure: that when the last ding-dong of doom has changed and faded from the lastworthless rock hanging tideless in the last red and dying evening, that even then there will still beone more sound: that of his puny inexhaustible voice, still talking. I refuse to accept this. I believethat man will not merely endure: he will prevail . He is immortal, not because he alone amongcreatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion andsacrifice and endurance .

The poet's, the writer's, duty is to write about these things. It is his privilege to help manendure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride andcompassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past. The poet's voice need notmerely be the record of man, it can be one of the props, the pillars to help him endure and prevail.

Grammar Master

1. so... that...常用于表示“如此、这么……,以致于……”,引导的是结果状语从句,其中so是副词,常用来修饰形容词或副词。

例 She made so good a meal that we all ate far too much.

她做的饭菜那么好吃,结果我们都吃得太多了。

例 It was so good an exhibition that I went to see it several times.

展览是那么好,我去看了好几次。

当名词前有many,much,few,little等词修饰时,常用so...that...的结构。

2. enough to do sth.表示“如此……,足够……”,常用来强调程度之深,当主句和从句的主语一致,且that从句是肯定句时,可与so... that...转换。

→The man is strong enough to lift the heavy box.

那个男子非常强壮,能提起这么重的盒子。

例 He was so clever that he can understand what I said.

→He was clever enough to understand what I said.

他很聪明,能听懂我的意思。

当主句和从句的主语不一致,且that从句是肯定句时,enough to do sth.可以转换成enough for sb. to do sth.,但不定式的宾语需要省略。

例 The question is so easy that I can work it out.

→The question is easy enough for me to work out.

例 The box is so light that he can carry it.

→The box is light enough for him to carry.

enough还可单独当作形容词来用,表示“足够的”,当用作定语时,既可修饰可数名词,也可修饰不可数名词。

例 Are there enough seats for ten person?

有没有足够十人的座位?

例 We have enough food for a week.

我们有足够维持一周的食物。

只有当主语是代词、数词,或是“数词 + 名词”时,enough才可作表语用,如果主语是名词,enough便不能用作表语。
