This is AP News Minute. I. New fighting in Basra, Iraq. Reports indicate militiamen have overrun a number of police stations and an oil pipeline has been blown up. Also today more rockets were fired into the heavily-fortified Green Zone in Bagdad. II. Chinese television reports a fireworks explosion has killed at least 25 people. Nine others were hurt and five are missing. China Central TV says the firecrackers had been trucked to the Gobi Desert to be destroyed and blew up as they were being dumped into a ditch. III. Delta Airlines is voluntarily reinspecting wiring bundles on 133 of its MD-80 and MD-90 planes. It’s not known how many flights may have to be canceled. American Airlines canceled about 325 flights yesterday so its crews could inspect wires on MD-80s. IV. Endeavor is home safe. The space shuttle and its 7 crew members traveled 6.5 million miles, and spent almost two weeks in the International Space Station before making their way home. Endeavor landed in Kennedy space center about an hour after sunset. |
