1.Hurricane Gustav is just a day away from a possible major hit on New Orleans. The mayor is pleading with the last of the the city's residents to get out. Meanwhile, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal and other state officials are encouraging all coastal residents to move to safety. 2.Neither President Bush nor Vice President Cheney are going to St. Paul, Minnesota for the Republic convention tomorrow. Instead, the president will travel to Texas to meet with emergency workers and evacuees. He says the federal government is doing everything it can to prepare for the storm. 3.John McCain says he's ordering changes to the convention. The presumptive Republican nominee wants it to reflect the seriousness of Hurricane Gustav. 4.Chinese rescue teams are working to reach survivors of a 6.1 magnitude earthquake. It killed at least 27 people and injured hundreds in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. China's official news agency says the quake turned tens of thousands of homes into rubble, damaged major bridges and cracked three reservoirs. |
