II. Language and Culture Notes
1. To invite people to eat out Many people in English speaking countries, including the Chinese who live there, like to go and eat out in restaurants with their families. They may drive quite a long distance to eat in a restaurant which serves special food. Chinese, as well as Korean, Japanese and Italian restaurants, therefore, are very popular in the West. If you invite a friend to eat out, you pay for the party.
2. Sense of timing People should cultivate a good habit of arriving on time. If you are meeting people on business an interview, an appointment, a meeting, a class, etc. you should arrive a little earlier. It is not acceptable to be late. For social gatherings, though, different cultures have different senses of time. Appropriate behavior depends on your understanding of the particular culture. For example, a few minutes late for a dinner party is usually appreciated by the hostess.

I'll Show You the Way
I. Tapescript
Pat Hogan was traveling around the country in the car. One evening he was driving along a road and looking for a small hotel when he saw an old man at the side of the road. He stopped his car and said to the old man, 'I want to go to the Sun Hotel. Do you know it?'
'Yes,' the old man answered. 'I'll show you the way.'
He got into Pat's car, and they drove for about twelve miles. When they came to a small house, the old man said, 'Stop here.'
Pat stopped and looked at the house. 'But this isn't a hotel,' he said to the old man.
'No,' the old man answered, 'this is my house. And now I'll show you the way to the Sun Hotel. Turn around and go back nine miles. Then you'll see the Sun Hotel on the left.'
