3. In this year's Christmas message, Pope Benedict XVI urged listeners not to lose hope as they confront financial crisis, violence and increasing poverty. He asked them to join in "authentic solidarity" to prevent global ruin.

4. In Baghdad, soldiers are sending Christmas and New Year's messages to their families back home. Violence is down from 180 attacks a day last year to about ten a day this year, giving soldiers a reason to be hopeful for the coming year.
