Joseph Arthur最广为人知的作品当推Shrek和American Pie里两首很动人的插曲：You're so true和Honey and the Moon。Joseph Arthur出生于俄亥俄州的一个小镇Akron，伴随着酒精.药物和嬉皮音乐成长，曾有一段不成功的punk摇滚经历，之后开始个人词曲创作，直到签约至Peter Gabriel的Real World旗下。1997年首张专集《BigCity Secrets》由Marcus Dravs担当制作，专集里Peter Gabriel 和 Brian Eno令人吃惊的演唱了和声，却并未引起太多人的注意。直到2000年Arthur在Virgin旗下推出力作《Come to Where I'm From》他才真正被人们所熟知。第三张专集 《REDEMPTION'S SON》在2002年发表。Joseph Arthur的声音有着一种带着幽暗色彩的独特质感，仿佛阴暗的房间里淡淡的烟雾在缓慢升腾，充满疲惫和伤感，即使在那些稍显欢快的曲子里，也依然有着一种说不出的压抑，那种独特的声音气质似乎更多的来自彼岸的英伦，如nick drake.the cure.the auters这些乐团。他的音乐则从乡村摇滚.民谣中吸取养分，简单的配器，吉他，口琴，少量的钢琴，在有些作品里他也尝试着运用一些实验性的手法，来表现某种躁动和沉迷的情绪，听起来也是一样的精彩。JA所有专辑封面内页全部自己设计创作，他本人深受William De Kooning, Franz Kline, Basquiat, Van Gogh ，Andy Warhol的影响，那些极富抽象感的画作带着强烈的疏离感，灰暗的底色上充斥着零乱变形的线条.怪异的脸谱和木讷的表情，许多不听音乐的人也会被他的画作所吸引，99年的那张ep《Vacancy》还曾经在德国获得一项设计奖。
