1. The 111th Congress opens today with the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression at the top of its agenda. President-elect Barack Obama's proposal could provide businesses with billions of dollars in tax cuts. That's a key factor in bringing the Democratic-led Congress in need of Republicans' support.

2、Roland Burris was on Capitol Hill to claim his Senate seat this morning but was turned away. The Democratic leadership has raised objections to Burris's appointment by embattled Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. Burris asked to move forward with negotiations or legal battle. 

3、French President Nicolas Sarkozy is urging Syria to help broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Sarkozy wants Syria to pressure Hamas. The Syria's president called Israel's offensive "a war crime". He added that Israel will not be able to finish off Hamas.

4、The Pope is urging Israelis and Palestinians (to) sit down for peace talks. During today's Epiphany Mass, Pope Benedict said he's worried about the military conflict in the Gaza Strip and encourages efforts to bring the violent struggle to an end.
