Hello, I'm Naamua Delaney at the CNN center in Atlanta. And here's a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS. Another roller coaster of a day on Wall Street, the Dow surged hundreds of points in early trading, up more than 400 points at the opening, but the Dow falling quickly after the initial gains. But big closings for international markets, Japan's Nikkei Index gained more than 14 percent for a new record. And many European markets are also going strong. Some analysts attribute the gains to governments across the globe stepping in to stabilize their financial systems. Two huge wildfires are ravaging Southern California, just north of Los Angeles. Fuelled by the warm Santa Ana winds, they have already killed at least two people. Thousands have been evacuated and a state of emergency has been declared in two counties. Right now firefighters are splitting their resources, trying to prevent the 60-mile per hour winds from driving flames pass containment lines. Election officials in Ohio are looking into alleged voter registration fraud by the liberal activist group ACORN. In Cleveland one voter said he signed 73 voter registration forms in return for cigarettes or money. And others claimed they were pressured to sign. ACORN registrations have been investigated in a dozen states. The group says it will fire anyone who breaks the law. ACORN says it has registered 1.3 million new voters this year. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is expected to keep his job as Canadians cast their ballots today in early elections. The Prime Minister called the vote in hopes of winning a parliamentary majority for his Conservative Party. But analysts say that is unlikely. There is a new storm brewing out in the Caribbean. Tropical Storm Omar is swirling in the Atlantic. The storm’s already prompted tropical storm warnings in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The storm is moving slowly at about two miles an hour. No definite track for the storm yet, but forecasters expect it to strengthen to a hurricane later in the week. Well, those are the headlines this hour. Do stay with CNN for more on these stories and the other news of the day. |
