LESSON 158 SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE
“I’ve never had any objection to you eating apples in bed,” said Beyyl, “but nowadays I do find your incessant chomping somewhat obscene and obtrusive. Actually, it’s obstacle to our continued blissful marital relationship. Come to think of it, you never used to do this, but over the past year or so it seems to have become an obsession with you.”
“Yeah,” grunted Henry. “And you are obsessed with the observance of your obscure and obsolete ideas on how a husband and wife should relate to one another. It’s not me who obstructs our blissful marital relationship, as you call it, but it’s you who’s the obstruction.” he said, talking another bite at his apple. “Why can’t you be just a little more objective?” he continued. “Of course, you are under no obligation, but I’d really be obliged to you if you’d at least try.”
“You really do like to obscure the issue, don’t you?” Berry retorted. “I am slowly coming to the conclusion that a happy relationship is no longer obtainable between the two of us. In fact, I am no longer willing to go on with the obligatory exchanges of niceties that are supposed to be part and parcel of a marriage. Now, tomorrow, if you would oblige me to come with me to see my lawyer, my dear, we can sign call the papers necessary to enable me to obtain a decree of divorce. And once that’s done, I can promise you that I shall do my best to obliterate my memory of the past year – you and your apples and all! And, by the way, would you mind sleeping on the sofa tonight?”
