1.A senior administration official says President Barack Obama is prepared to accept some Taliban involvement in Afghanistan with the president willing to send only the number of troops needed to keep al-Qaida at bay. The president's final decision on a strategy in Afghanistan is still weeks away.

2.Newly released control tower recordings capture an air traffic controller bantering with a female friend about a dead cat as a small plane flew toward the helicopter. The collision killed nine people.

3.Lengthy airline delays are twice  as common now as  in 1990 and will get worse as the economy recovers. The Brookings Institution blames much of the bound-prolonged short flights between major cities.

4.The Nobel Prize in literature goes to Herta Mueller, a German writer born in Romania persecuted for her critical descriptions of life behind the Iron  Curtain.
