W: What a marvelous oil painting. Whose work is it? M: It’s painted by Yifei Chen, the world famous painter and director. W: It gives me a sense of serenity. M: Serenity and peace fill his painting which characterizes his works. Dialogue 2. W: Wow, that’s a really amazing piece of art you are creating. M: Talking about amazing? You’ve got to check out Bech’s. Her work will really blow your way. W: Really? What’s so amazing about her work? M: She uses the painting style of Dadaism in her work. Dialogue 3. W: How can I appreciate modern art? It leaves me cool. M: It would help if you follow the 4 steps in looking at modern art. W: What should I do then? M: Step 1 is to identify the media used in the work. Is it a drying, a painting, an etching or lithograph. W: I think I can do that. I can tell the difference between an etching and a lithograph. M: Step 2 is to take an inventory of exactly what you see, the lines, the colors, the shapes and textures. W: Well, I suppose I can do that, too. M: Step 3 is to think about the interpretation of the piece of art and what the lines, colors and shapes and textures might mean, after analyzing the work from a number perspectives you can make a judgment in step 4. W: Thank you for the lesson in art appreciation. Exercise. 1. Kendensky produced abstract art characterized by imagery that had a musical quality. 2. He didn’t show his paintings at the exhibit. 3. His paintings are more than charming images of women and children. 4. I really appreciate his paintings. 5. His paintings are indeed an actual reflection of the mysterious communication between his soul and nature. 6. His master pieces are lively and abundant in feeling. 7. His paintings show his great talent in Chinese arts and skills. 8. Do you prefer paintings or calligraphy? 9. His paintings are on display. 10. Far from admiring his paintings I dislike them intensely. 11. Visitors are told to keep their hands off the paintings. 12. His paintings are famous for originality. 13. Maybe those art works have no practical value to you. But they do to me. 14. Macasa was largely considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. 15.
