[00:08.93]1 Listen to the tape for the first time
[00:13.84]and write down the main idea of the listening passage.
[02:27.33]2 Listen to the discussion of "Easter at Home".
[02:33.99]Then answer the following questions.
[02:38.07]LISTENING TASK
[02:46.32]1 Listen carefully to the recording of "Festivals of the Dead".
[02:52.98]And use the information from the student's book as well.
[02:57.95]First name the country of each of the following pictures.
[05:11.51]READING TAKS
[05:19.27]1 Read the passage on carnival in Quebec.
[05:25.33]Imagine what the scene would look like.
[05:28.99]WINTER CARNIVAL IN QUEBEC
[05:32.33]We are sitting in a cafe in old Quebec, drinking hot coffee to try to warm up.
[05:38.52]The temperature is 32 degrees below freezing.
[05:43.25]The windows are covered with steam from the heat inside.
[05:47.90]Outside,the snow covers the streets
[05:51.74]and is piled up along the sidewalks and in parking lots.
[05:55.87]The music and lights of the carnival continue,
[05:59.94]but we have been watching the parades,
[06:03.18]riding in horse carriages and listening to the music all day.
[06:07.75]Our feet are freezing and our noses are red.
[06:12.30]Quebec carnival is the biggest winter festival in the world-every year,
[06:18.36]hundreds of thousands of people come to Quebec
[06:21.88]to take part in a week of activities.
[06:25.36]If you come, you must be prepared to keep moving,
[06:30.11]as it is too cold stand and watch for long.
[06:34.06]Early in the morning, you can watch the snowboarding competitions on the hill
[06:39.93]overlooking th river.
[06:42.49]The competitors speed down the track and through the air as though they could fly.
[06:48.37]If you are brave enough, you can try the canoe race.
[06:52.81]Five or six men paddle in each canoe across the great St Lawrence River,
[06:58.69]which is partly frozen.
[07:01.33]Of course, the river is full of big pieces of ice,
[07:05.90]and if you were to tall in,you would freeze in less than two minutes.
[07:10.94]One of the favourite events is the dog-sled race,
[07:15.70]in which teams of about 6 Husky dogs pull long sleds
[07:21.16]at great speeds along a snowy trakc.
[07:25.23]One person runs behind the sled.
[07:28.47]shouting to the dogs to encourage them.
[07:31.53]The sound of the dogs barking,
[07:34.30]the calls of the drivers and the shouts of the crowd
[07:38.14]make an exciting Northern experience.
[07:41.48]The dogs are beautiful strong animals, with long, thick fur.
[07:46.73]Many of them have blue eyes.
[07:49.97]After admiring the ice sculptures everywhere in the city,
[07:54.70]much like those in Harbin in China,
[07:58.17]you can have a cup of tea or coffee in an igloo.
[08:02.43]It is amazing how warm these ice houses can be!
[08:07.11]Late in the evening, you can go to the snow palace,
[08:11.96]where Bonhomme the snowman is king, and join the crowd.
[08:17.21]You can dance outside to the music of a band,
[08:21.58]who are all dressed in heavy clothes-
[08:24.92]even some of their instruments are dressed up for winter.
[08:29.36]Finally we sit down in our cafe to warm up and to plan tomorrow
[08:35.53]-perhaps we'll join the snowmobile races-or perhaps we'll just sleep in |
