[00:-5.00]4.What do animals do to survive in places where it is very hot or cold,
[00:-6.00]where there isn't much water,or where it is difficult to find food?
[00:-7.00]ARE WE ENDANGERED?
[00:-8.00]Steve Jones is an environmental expert
[00:-9.00]who tries to keep animals and plants from becoming endangered.
[00:10.00]We are not alone in the world.
[00:11.00]We Human beings could not survive without all the plants and animals around us.
[00:12.00]We often talk about how important it is to take good care of ourselves and our planet
[00:13.00]but we don't always do sa we say,
[00:14.00]Steve says sa he takes us on a tour of Green Park in Birmingham.
[00:15.00]Many of the earth's plants and animals have already died out,
[00:16.00]and several other species are endangered.
[00:17.00]If we want to live a better life and have a bright future,
[00:18.00]we must learn to act in ways that do not harm other living things.
[00:19.00]If we know more about what causes endangerment,
[00:20.00]we may be able to take measures before it is too late.
[00:21.00]A species can become endangered for different reasons.
[00:22.00]Animals and plants must have a habitat,or home,
[00:23.00]which is comfortable and clean,
[00:24.00]and where there is enough food and other resources.
[00:25.00]They are all used to their environment;
[00:26.00]that is,they have learnt how to live successfully in their habitat.
[00:27.00]When the habitat of a species is changed or destroyed,
[00:28.00]the animal or plant has to either adapt to the change or find a new home.
[00:29.00]If this is not possible, the animals and plants of the habitat must change again
[00:30.00]If the new species is too strong or uses too much of the resources in the habitat,
[00:31.00]some of the original species may become endangered.
[00:32.00]A species may also die out
[00:33.00]if humans or other animals use too much of a plant or kill many animals.
[00:34.00]The good news is that there is a lot we can do to help.
[00:35.00]First of all,we need to learn more about animals, plants and the environment.
[00:36.00]Experts tell us that we need to think about what we can do
[00:37.00]to keep animals and plants from becoming endangered.
[00:38.00]Steve says that we can help by creating more space for animals and plants:
[00:39.00]You can plant a tree or build a birdhouse. It is simple but useful.
[00:40.00]Steve also wants us to think about what we do:
[00:41.00]Please don't pollute the environment.
[00:42.00]If we find out more about what we should do,
[00:43.00]We can help Steve and others like him
[00:44.00]keep animals and plants-and ourseves-from becoming endangered.

[00:55.00]1 Answer the following questions
[00:56.00]1.Why do animals and plants become endangered?
[00:57.00]2.A species can become endangered when its habitat is changed or destroyed.
[00:58.00]Can you think of things human beings do
[00:59.00]that may destroy or cause changes in a habitat?
[-1:00.00]3.What can we do to protect animals and plants that are being endangered?
[-1:-1.00]2 Work in groups.Read about Jennifer's idea below and then write your own list.
[-1:-2.00]There are many things we can do to make our world better.
[-1:-3.00]Even small things can make a big difference.
[-1:-4.00]Jennifer has decided to do something about the environment
[-1:-5.00]She will do at least one good thing every day.
[-1:-6.00]She has made a list of things she can do.
[-1:-7.00]Here's Jennifer's list:
[-1:-8.00]I will pick up rubbish from the ground.
[-1:-9.00]I will not use plastic bags.
[-1:10.00]I will recycle batteries.
[-1:11.00]I will tell my friends to protect the environment.
[-1:12.00]Think of things you could do.Write a list.
[-1:13.00]Without air, water and sunlight there would be no living things.
[-1:14.00]Because they are so important,
[-1:15.00]ecosystems try to be very careful with these valuable resources.
[-1:16.00]Human beings often throw away things they have used only once.
[-1:17.00]In good ecosystems, resources are used many times.
[-1:18.00]The waste of plants and animals will become food for another.
[-1:19.00]In fact, nature is much better at recycling than we humans are.
[-1:20.00]Maybe we should learn from nature and become better recyclers
[-1:21.00]-if we throw away too much,
[-1:22.00]we may be throwing away our future.
[-1:23.00]We all care about nature and the environment,
[-1:24.00]but we may not always do everything we could or should.
[-1:25.00]Scientists who know a lot about the environment
[-1:26.00]say that we should"Reduce,Reuse,Recycle and Respond".
[-1:27.00]Let's see what that means.
[-1:28.00]Without air, water and sunlight there would be no living things.
