[00:18.65]Do you mind if I smoke?
[00:21.89]I'm sorry,but it's not allowed.
[00:25.76]Would you mind if I smoked in the office nest door?
[00:30.41]I'm afraid all these offices are non-smoking offices.
[00:34.66]Oh dear!Where can I go if I want to smoke a cigarette?
[00:40.44]You can smoke in the entrance hall.Or outside,of course.
[00:45.71]Thanks.I wonder if I could use your phone.
[00:50.36]Sure.Go ahead.
[00:53.92]Lesson 6
[01:02.17]1.Reading comprehension
[01:06.32]Read the passage to see if these sentences are true:
[01:11.47]1.Chinese people smoke more than British people.
[01:16.93]2.In Britain more women smoke than men.
[01:22.70]NO SMOKING,PLEASE!(1)
[01:26.96]At present about 38% of the Chinese population smoke.
[01:33.62]89% of smokers are male.Every year,
[01:39.79]millions of smokers die because of illnesses which are caused by smoking tobacco.
[01:46.34]The Chinese government receives a lot of money from sales of tobacco;
[01:52.20]in 1989 it received about 24 billion yuan.
[01:58.26]But in the same year, cigarette smoking cost the government even more money,
[02:04.81]about 28 billion yuan.
[02:08.78]Smokers cost the government a lot of money for two reasons.
[02:13.93]First,money is spent looking after people with illnesses
[02:19.70]which have been caused by smoking.
[02:23.36]Second,many fires are caused by smokers.
[02:28.61]People who smoke in bed often fall asleep while they are smoking.
[02:34.28]The bedclothes catch fire and the whole house may be burnt down.
[02:39.53]China produces one third of the world'a cigarettes.
[02:44.39]Each day, about 220 million packets of cigarettes are smoked by Chinese.
[02:50.66]This is good news for the tobacco companies,
[02:55.02]but bad news for the health of the nation.
[02:59.17]Every year, tobacco companies must persuade new people to start smoking cigarettes.
[03:06.54]This is because each year millions of smokers die from the habit.
[03:12.10]In Britain, which has a population of only 58 million people,
[03:18.06]110,000 people die from smoking each year.
[03:24.02]The chance is that one smoker in four will die from smoking.
[03:29.66]In Britain, sales of cigarettes have been reduced by 30% in the last ten years.
[03:36.92]Just under a third of the population now smokes, about 17 million people.
[03:44.08]In the 16-19 age group,32% of women smoke,compared to 28% of men.
[03:53.51]However,in the 20-24 age group,39% of women smoke and 38%of men.
[04:03.88]The problem is that 300 people are dying each day from illnesses caused by smoking
[04:11.25]Therefore,if the tobacco companies want to remain in business,
[04:16.99]they have to encourage more young people to start smoking.
[04:22.27]Lesson 7
[04:29.71]1.NO SMOKING,PLEASE!(2)
[04:35.07]In Britain,70% of smokers say that they would like to stop smoking,
[04:41.44]and of these smokers,83% have tried more than once to give it up.
[04:47.97]Why do smokers continue to smoke,
[04:51.63]even when they know that the habit may kill them
[04:55.89]or at least cause a serious illness?
[04:59.76]The problem with tobacco is that it contains a drug called nicotine.
[05:05.40]Nicotine is a drug that gets gets one into the habit of smoking.
[05:10.96]That means that once you start taking the drug,it is hard to stop.
[05:16.42]When smokers who are used to nicotine go without it for an hour or two,
[05:21.88]they begin to feel bad.
[05:25.36]The body is calling for a new supply of the drug nicotine.
[05:30.21]So they say "I must have a cigarette".
[05:34.76]In fact,they don't need a cigarette.
[05:39.15]All they need is something to make them feel better at that moment.
[05:44.19]One thing that will stop them feeling bad is the drug nicotine,
[05:49.34]which is contained in cigarettes.
[05:52.99]And so their habit of smoking continues |
