It's the sign that represents the Hollywood dream.High up on the hills,the huge white letters have dominated the Los Angeles' skyline since 1923.But the landmark was under threat.Investors bought the lands surrounding it with the intention of building houses and blocking the sign from public view,so a campaign was set up to buy the land and stop the development.Donations came in from Hollywood stars and from businesses and individuals across the US.But the fund was still short.So the funder of playboy stepped in with a last-minute donation of more than a half million pounds.Hugh Hefner says the sign is Hollywood's Eiffel Tower.

"What we are doing now, is saving the area around the sign so that you can see the sign in its appropriate pristine glory rather than surrounded by houses."

His donation means the campaign has the money it needs to buy the land.California's famous governor announced the battle to save the sign was over.

"The Hollywood has been very kind to me. And I came over here Hollywood turned me into an action hero.So of course when I heared that there was 130 acres around the Hollywood sign that need to be protected,I did what the terminator was supposed to do,which is the champion to action.And this is exactly what I did. "

The land around the sign will now be protected and will become part of the graphic public park.It's been described as a Hollywood ending that hoped for.
