Lionel Richie的音乐历程从70年代Motown唱片最具影响力团体The Commodores开始，1971年时，由William King、Thomas McClary、Ronald LaPread、Walter "Clyde" Orange、Lionel Richie以及Milan Williams所组成的The Commodores，跟着Jackson 5巡回演唱2年半，1974年发行首张专辑《Machine Gun》，首支同名单曲立刻便进入了Billboard top 10，之后这个以Lionel Richie为主唱的放克／灵魂乐团，在70年代发行了8张录音室专辑，直到82年Lionel Richie离团单飞为止，拥有Three Times A Lady、Easy、Still这些畅销单曲。
