Authorities in Shanghai have shut down operations at the American-owned meat supplier Shanghai Husi Food Company after it was discovered that the firm, which supplies products to major American fast-food restaurants such as KFC and McDonald’s, may have been selling expired chicken and beef. The shocking details were first revealed in an undercover report by the Shanghai-based Dragon TV.
Joining us in the studio now is Liu Baocheng, Dean of the Center for International Business Ethics1 at the University of International Business and Economics. Welcome, Professor Liu.
Q1: When it comes to food, at least in the past, Chinese people have favoured foreign brands due to their perceived safety. What impact will this case have on China’s food industry and particularly on foreign food businesses?
Q2: As far as we can tell, the clients of Husi Food seem to have been unaware2 of the violations3. So should clients like Yum Brands and McDonald’s be held responsible for the wrongdoings of their suppliers? If so, to what extent?
