The summer season has started in India with a ferocity not seen in recent years. More than 1,100 people have been killed as a heat wave sweeps across the country. Most of the fatalities have been reported from the southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, with temperatures touching 50 degrees Celsius in some places.

Doing all they can to feel better in sweltering heat as temperatures near 50 Degree Celsius in some places in India

South Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana most affected

Officials say, since 18th May 333 people have died in Andhra Pradesh and more than 200 people have lost their lives in the state of Telangana. The government announced compensation of 1500 dollars for families of the deceased.

The Indian met department has issued a red alert for these two states and has said, the heat will continue.

Most deaths have happened in rural South India because of extreme dehydration and heat strokes but here in New Delhi as well, the temperatures have been soaring putting a massive burden on India's power infrastructure. The demand is high and the supply is not being able to meet it leading to power cuts.

For hours on end, almost all of India is witnessing power cuts making things even worse.

Though the intense heat is affecting everyone, the most vulnerable are homeless people and daily wage construction workers who work under the scorching sun

This is one of shelters for homeless in the Indian capital. The condition is so bad that everyone is sleeping outside. For the 360 people who live here, its like living in a furnace With temperatures touching 46 degree Celsius in Delhi, inside this building its at least five degrees hotter. There have been nearly 200 deaths in North India, 80 per cent of who were homeless.

People living here tell us, survival is a struggle.

The heat exposes India's lack of basic infrastructure. One-third of India's 1.2 billion population still does not have access to power. People who do have, face power outages. Water is short in supply. The Delhi government says these issues are long-term challenges.

The monsoons that will first hit India's southern coast, will take at least one week before it hits India's dry Northern and central plains.
