China's best known respirologist, Zhong Nanshan, visited the South Korean Mers patient in hospital on Tuesday. He offered his advise on preventing the spread of the virus.
Dr. Zhong Nanshan became famous for his work on SARS in 2003. On Tuesday morning he discussed the patient's treatment with doctors from the Huizhou health department. Later he and other experts went to the ICU and visited patient.
"Over the past two days, the patient's condition was deteriorating1, but today, from our observation, his condition is stable and slightly improved," Zhong said.
Treatment continues, but there is no known cure or vaccine2 for the Mers virus. Experts say prevention and control is the key.
"It is vital for health departments to isolate3 and quarantine confirmed patients. The Huizhou health department did a good job to prevent the further spread of the deadly virus," Zhong said.
Dr. Zhong Nanshan says he is impressed by the improvement in prevention since the SARS crisis of 2003.
"The government, medical staff and ordinary residents all have a better understanding about the disease. National prevention work has improved a lot," Zhong said.
Most of the people who had close contact with the patient have been isolated4 and are under in medical obeservation, and so far there are no signs of illness.
Doctors and nurses at Huizhou municipal central hospital are receiving patients as usual. Dr. Zhong Nanshan says there's no need for people to panic as infections have been contained and there is no risk of sustained transmissions.
