On May 27th, 458 people boarded the ship, starting their cruise tour from Nanjing to Chongqing. After six days of voyage, at around 9:30 pm on Monday night, the ship capsized during a storm in the Jianli section of the Yangtze River.
More than three hours later, search and rescue authorities along the Yangtze River learned of the accident and began the rescue operation. By Tuesday morning, 10 people had been saved.
At noon, a 65-year-old woman was rescued by divers1. This afternoon, rescuers cut open part of the ship and took out three more people. And the search for survivors2 continues as we speak.
The ill-fated ship is called the "Eastern Star". It's been in service for nearly 20 years and can carry up to 534 people. It's one of five luxury vessels3 operated by the Chongqing Eastern Shipping4 Corporation.
