Hundreds of soldiers from the Chinese Navy, as well as students from the Naval University of Engineering in Wuhan city, Hubei province, are involved in the rescue mission for the Eastern Star ship, which sank in the Yangtze River Monday night.
Navy divers are combing the compartments of the ship for survivors. They are equipped with sonar scan devices, underwater screens and cutting machines. But the ongoing rescue efforts have been complicated by the intricate layout of the vessel and the adverse weather conditions.
A medical team from the Chinese navy is standing by. The search area has been extended to 220 kilometers downstream from the site of the accident.
