What do Taraji P. Henson, Zoe Kazan, Susan Kelechi Watson, Mandy Moore and Marisa Tomei all have in common other than acting1?
A favorite color combination, apparently2.
The four actors all showed up at American television’s Emmy Awards show wearing gowns of pink and red. That color mix was the strongest trend in female fashion at the event Sunday night in Los Angeles.
Fashion choices by Zendaya, Gwendoline Christie and Billy Porter also turned heads at the Emmy’s.
It is common to see many stars wearing the same single color. But the combination of pink and red was especially noticeable on the purple carpet covering the walkway.
The clothing choices at the Emmys showed a “willingness to have a little fun with fashion,” said Kerry Pieri. She is the fashion and features director for HarpersBazaar.com.
Henson’s French tulle gown with a see-through red cape3 was from designer Vera Wang. Gucci created Kazan’s black, red and pink silk gown. Badgley Mischka made Kelechi Watson’s version, a red dress with light pink on the arms. Moore wore Brandon Maxwell, with pink on top and red on the bottom.
Marielle Bobo, fashion director for Essence, noted4 that seafoam was another favorite color at the event. Regina King, Brittany Snow, Jameela Jamil and Padma Lakshmi all dressed up in this color.
Bobo said that seafoam works on many different skin colors. She also praised the red and pink parade as an “unexpected yet refreshing5 combination.”
Misa Hylton is creative partner and designer at fashion line MCM. She was a huge fan of director Ava DuVernay’s gown. The dress was made of shiny golden material with a sparkly silver overlay. It came from designer Reem Accra.
Hylton said Duvernay’s look “definitely wowed.”
However, Hylton had little praise for about half of stars at the event. The male half, that is.
“I was bored,” she said. “On the men, the brown tuxedos7 were just drab.”
