By now you've begun developing a strong intonation², with clea r peaks and reduced valleys, so you're ready for the next step. In addition to intonation, there  is another aspect of speech that indicates meaning. This can be called  phrasing  or tone³.  Have you ever caught just a snippet of a conversation in your own language, and somehow known how to piece together what came before  or after the part you heard? This has to do with phrasing. In a sentence, phrasing tells the listener where th e speaker is at the mome nt, where the speaker is going, and if the speaker is finished or not. No tice that the intonation stays on the nouns⁴.

2 intonation   

n.语调，声调；发声

3 tone   

n.语气，音调，气度，色调；vt.（up）增强

参考例句：

• There was a tone of mockery in his voice.他说话的语气含有嘲笑的意味。
• Holmes used an informal,chatty tone in his essays.霍姆斯在文章中语气轻松随便。

4 nouns   

n.名词；名词( noun的名词复数 )
