One dead, 10 missing in east China boat accident 
One person has died and ten others are missing after a fishing boat capsized in sea waters off the coast of Qingdao City of east China's Shandong Province on Saturday morning.
Some 20 boats, two planes and two warships¹ are searching for the missing.

3 Chinese citizens killed, 2 missing in Afghanistan: Chinese embassy
3 Chinese citizens have been killed and another two are missing in the Afghanistan capital Kabul.
The Chinese Embassy says the Chinese nationals were murdered in an apartment building in the city.
It is believed the attack focused specifically on Chinese citizens.
The Chinese embassy in Kabul is calling on the Afghan government to ensure the safety and security of all Chinese citizens and institutions in Afghanistan.

Chinese, Russian troops conduct first joint² live fire exercises 
Chinese and Russian troops conducted their first joint exercises using live ammunition³ during anti-terrorism drill Peace Mission-2013 on Friday.
The joint maneuvers⁴ were carried out at the Chebarkul combined training range here in Russia's Ural Mountains. 
The troops also practised joint reconnaissance, joint block and control (of accident areas), joint strike and joint support for campaign equipment. 
Peace Mission-2013, running from July 27 to Aug. 15, has three phases -- troop deployment⁵, battle planning and simulated combat.

Chinese ships patrol Diaoyu Islands 
A fleet of the China Coast Guard (CCG) on Saturday patrolled territorial⁶ waters surrounding the Diaoyu Islands, according to the State Oceanic Administration .
The China Coast Guard, which merges⁷ the maritime⁸ law enforcement functions of four agencies responsible for fisheries administration, maritime surveillance, customs enforcement and border control, formally unveiled its board last month.

Obama pledges "appropriate reforms" to NSA 
U.S. President Barack Obama has announced reforms to the US government's controversial surveillance programs. 
Obama promised a review of the National Security Agency program by an expert committee and constraints⁹ on the part of the Patriot¹⁰ Act that enables the collecting of phone records.
He also promised more transparency.

U.S. to reopen 18 of 19 closed diplomatic missions
The United States will reopen on Sunday 18 of the 19 embassies and consulates¹¹ shut in anticipation¹² of terror attacks.
The State Department says the U.S. embassy in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa will remain closed "because of ongoing¹³ concerns about a threat stream indicating the potential for terrorist attacks emanating¹⁴ from Al- Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.

Suicide attack attempt foiled in Pak capital of Islamabad
A suicide attack attempt on a mosque¹⁵ was foiled on Friday when a suicide bomber¹⁶ was shot dead in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad.
Officials say the suicide bomber successfully entered a mosque in Bara Kahu area of Islamabad but failed to explode his jacket before being gunned down by a security guard. 
Earlier in the day, at least 10 people were killed and 26 others injured when some militants¹⁷ opened fire at worshippers coming out of a mosque after offering Eid prayer in Pakistan's southwestern provincial¹⁸ capital of Quetta.

9 detained, officials sacked over baby trafficking scandal 
Police have detained nine suspects in connection with alleged¹⁹ trafficking of babies at a hospital in northwest China's Shaanxi Province.
The local government says the detained suspects include Zhang Shuxia, a doctor with the Fuping County Maternal²⁰ and Child Health Care Hospital.
Three newborn babies have so far been rescued in the hospital scandal.

China reports new suspected H7N9 human infection 
A new suspected case of human infection with the H7N9 strain of avian influenza²¹ has been reported in south China's Guangdong Province.
The 51-year-old female patient, surnamed Chen, is in critical condition.
Chen had been a poultry²² slaughtering²³ worker in a local market for many years.
Thirty-six people who had close contact with her have been put under medical observation. They have shown no abnormal symptoms so far.

China to tighten²⁴ supervision²⁵ over formula production 
Milk powder producers will be monitored more strictly²⁶ and companies with quality or safety problems will be severely²⁷ punished.
The China Food and Drug Administration says local supervisory bodies must take full responsibility for helping²⁸ milk firms improve their safety and management. 
The administration highlights the need for quality and safety in baby formula production, adding that specialists will work with local authorities to make sure safety risks are eliminated.

Chinese police crack 19,000 shoddy goods cases 
Chinese police have cracked over 19,000 criminal cases involving production and sale of fake or shoddily made products so far this year.
The Ministry²⁹ of Public Security says police forces across the nation have throughout this year maintained a tough stance against forgery³⁰ as well as violations³¹ of intellectual property rights. 
To date, police have confiscated³² counterfeit³³ or shoddily-made products including more than 5,000 tonnes of food and drinks, two billion tablets or bottles of drugs and injections as well as over 53 million pieces of personal care products, machinery³⁴ and electrical products.
