 New South Wales police officers are in Brisbane looking for disgraced former detective Roger Rogerson. They wanted speak to him about the murder of Sydney student Jamie Gao. He was killed over a botched drug deal. A body believed to be that of Mr. Gao was found wrapped in a blue tarpaulin¹ off a Sydney beach yesterday. 

 

The ABC has obtained a secret recording² of a Manus Island security briefing that challenges the official version of the event that led to the death of Iranian asylum³ seeker Reza Barati. The recording reveals security firm G4S planned to hand control over to PNG (Papua New Guinea) police if its guards lost control of the facility. 

 

We have got a plan in place if there is an incident. We would hand over an incident if we couldn't control it ourselves to the mobile squad⁴, and when they've done that, wed⁵ take it back over again.

 

Ukraine has launched an air strike against the pro-Russian rebels who have seized a main airport in the eastern city of Donetsk. There have been reports of fierce gun battles and smoke can be seen billowing from the area. The attack comes just hours after Petro Poroshenko was elected as Ukraine's new president. 

 

And opponents of the European Union had made big gains in elections for the European Parliament. Britain's UK Independent Party and France's far-right National Front have topped the vote in their respective countries. Both parties ran on anti-EU and anti-immigration platforms.
