22 A Friend

 

　　When you read an English book, you often come across¹ new words. You might² tryto guess what the words mean from the words you know, but when you cannotguess the meanings³ of new words at all, what should you do?
You have a good friend then. From him you can learn what a word means⁴, how to pronounce⁵ a word, how to use a word, and so on. This friend can always be withyou, and you can always ask him to help you. Do you know who this friend is?
It is a dictionary⁶. You can learn some important⁷ things about words from it,so you must know how to use it.

2 might   

aux./v.(may的过去式)可能；可以，允许

参考例句：

• It looks as if it might snow.看起来好像要下雪了。
• Might I ask a question?我能问个问题吗？

3 meanings   

n.含义；意思( meaning的名词复数 )；含义；重要性；价值

参考例句：

• A good dictionary is an authority on the meanings of words. 一本好词典是词义的权威。 来自《简明英汉词典》
• That word has many loose meanings. 那个词有很多不确切的含义。 来自《简明英汉词典》

4 means   

n.方法，手段，折中点，物质财富

参考例句：

• That man used artful means to find out secrets.那人使用狡猾的手段获取机密。
• We must get it done by some means or other.我们总得想办法把它干完。

5 pronounce   

v.发…音；正确、清晰地吐(字、音等)

参考例句：

• Please pronounce after me.请跟我发音。
• How do you pronounce c-l-e-r-k?你怎么念c-l-e-r-k这词？

6 dictionary   

n.词典，字典，辞典

参考例句：

• I have a new dictionary.我有一本新字典。
• This is a very good dictionary.这是一本非常好的词典。

7 important   

adj.重要的；重大的；严重的

参考例句：

• It's important to find out what he is doing.弄清他在干什么是重要的。
• This is a very important problem.这个问题很重要。
