II. Language and Culture Notes
1. To invite people to eat out Many people in English speaking countries, including the Chinese who live there, like to go and eat out in restaurants with their families. They may drive quite a long distance to eat in a restaurant which serves special food. Chinese, as well as Korean, Japanese and Italian restaurants, therefore, are very popular in the West. If you invite a friend to eat out, you pay for the party.
2. Sense of timing3 People should cultivate4 a good habit of arriving on time. If you are meeting people on business an interview, an appointment, a meeting, a class, etc. you should arrive a little earlier. It is not acceptable5 to be late. For social gatherings6, though, different cultures have different senses of time. Appropriate7 behavior depends on your understanding of the particular culture. For example, a few minutes late for a dinner party is usually appreciated by the hostess.

'Yes,' the old man answered. 'I'll show you the way.'
