Usually, we go about our daily lives wanting to be as efficient as possible. For that reason, we may plan trips, commuting¹ or errands² going as directly as possible from one point to the next. To go a longer way, away from the most efficient path, seems illogical and time-wasting. If, on the other hand, a friend, colleague, family member or business associate asks us for some special favor, such as giving them a ride someplace or buying something for them, we may be willing to "go out of our way" on their behalf. This will take longer, but we make a special effort for the sake of good relations with them. If the people we help appreciate this, it will be worthwhile "going out of our way."
