Unit 7  This Way or That Way?

Part Ⅰ Getting ready
In every big city, traffic may prove to be a sticky problem. To have a system of effective traffic you need good engineering. In order to achieve this goal, traffic rules and regulations as well as devices such as signals, signs, and markings are installed to relieve vehicular congestion1 and to promote safety and pedestrian mobility2.

A  The following words and phrases will appear in this unit. All of them are related to traffic. Listen carefully and study the definitions.
   1. block: a building or group of buildings built between two streets
   2. terminus: a stop or station at the end of a railway or bus line
   3. cross-roads: a place where two or more roads cross
   4. traffic lights: a set of coloured lights, usually red, green and yellow, used for controlling and directing traffic especially where one road crosses another
   5. plaza3; a public square or marketplace, especially in towns in Spanish-speaking countries
   6. roundabout: traffic circle; a place where three or more roads meet, with a circular area in the middle round which the traffic must go, rather than straight across
   7. exit: side road; branch road
   8. dual4 carriageway: divided highway; a main road on which the traffic travelling in opposite directions is kept apart by a central band or separation of some sort
   9. ring road: a road that goes round the edge of a large town so that traffic does not have to pass through the centre
  10. by-pass: a road that passes round the side of a town or other busy area

B  Here are some short conversations about asking the way. Pay special attention to verbs. Supply the missing words.
   1. Woman: Do you know how to ______ Jann's house _________?
      Man:   Yeah. ______ this road until you ______ 21st Street. Then ________.
      Woman: _______ on 21st Street. OK...
      Man:   _______ 21st Street for about _______ until you _______ Main Street. Then _______.
      Woman: _______ on 21st, _______ on Main Street.
      Man:   He _______ 476 Main Street. It's on the _______ of the street.

   2. Man:   Should I ______ here?
      Woman: No. _______ going _______ and _______ at the _______.
      Man:   Do you _______ at Scott Road?
      Woman: That's right. __________ there.

   3. Man:   How far is it _______ to Los Angles?
      Woman: Oh, about ________ by car.
      Man:   What's the ________ way to _________ there?
      Woman: I-lO is the ________.

   4. Peter: We're having a party on ________. It's Jenny's ________. Would you like to come?
      Joe:   Sure. How do I ________ your house?
      Peter: Well, __________ after the hospital and we're ________.
      Joe:   OK. See you on ________.

Part Ⅱ Giving directions
When you come into a new city or town, the first thing you may do is to get a good city map. City maps are available in many places: gas stations, local drug stores, five-and-tens, and book stores. Then you can walk around the city with the map and look for landmarks5 such as department stores, big libraries, banks, churches, supermarkets, post offices, hotels, restaurants and cinemas. These one-of-a-kind buildings will help you get familiar with the city.

A  You are going to hear three statements and two conversations about giving directions. All of them are based on the following map. Look at the map and trace the routes while listening.

B  Now try this: listen to some more authentic6 versions of the statements and conversations. Complete the directions.
   1. __________ Town Hall -> __________ Cotton Street -> __________ the corner -> __________ South Park Street -> __________ about a block -> __________ Twist Avenue -> the museum is __________ the next crass-roads __________
   2.  _____the bank -> ____________ Central Avenue -> __________ about __________ minutes __________ South Park Street -> __________ -> __________ one block -> __________ Main Street -> the Department Store is __________
   3. __________ MacDonald's -> __________ Queen's High Street -> __________ about __________ block __________ Main Street -> __________ -> __________ blocks __________ the end of Main Street -> __________ the train station is __________
   4.  __________ the post office -> __________ Twist Avenue -> __________ the Big Church -> the ___________ bus terminus is __________ the Church __________
   5. __________ the Agency -> __________ -> __________ Main Street -> __________ the Hilton Hotel -> __________ Queen's High Street -> __________ the Grand Cinema -> __________ the road __________ the next traffic lights -> the Art Gallery is __________

Part Ⅲ  Finding the way
If the city you are going to is a big one, then it is very easy for you to get lost even with the help of a map. For example, a map may tell you that a certain place is five miles away, but actually it calls for a ten-mile ride to reach that place because of winding7 roads. To make sure you don't get lost, the most useful thing to do is to ask the way. You may either stop a stranger in the streets or telephone your friends. Usually it won't be difficult to find a call box alongside the street

A  You are going to hear a conversation in which a lost motorist phones her friend in a call box for directions. While listening for the first time, focus on the key words, add more key words if you can in the left-hand column. After the second listening complete the route in the right-hand column with the help of the notes.
   Route
   ... __________ -> __________ the London Road -> __________ Headington -> __________ the roundabout -> __________ the __________ exit __________ -> __________ the by-pass -> __________ the second roundabout -> __________ third roundabout -> __________ the __________ exit __________ -> God stow Road-> __________ a bridge -> __________ the ________ road __________

B  Now try this: listen to a more authentic version of the conversation.

Part Ⅳ  More about the topic: You Can't Miss It
China is a country of bicycles. Though it is not very comfortable to ride a bike during rush hours, people still prefer cycling to bus riding. But in some other countries, things are different. Since so many people drive cars, bike-riding may well be very dangerous or even impossible. Nowadays many people prefer walking if the place they are going to is within walking distance. To local townspeople walking doesn't seem to be a problem, but to travellers, walking is not so easy because they are not familiar with the city.
The following short story is about two brothers asking the way in Boston. Supply the missing words while listening.

   Last summer my brother and I stayed for a _______ with some ________ friends in Boston. That was our ______ trip away from __________ and we wanted to see _________ of Boston's beautiful ________.
   One morning we _______ out to look for a ______ tower. We stopped a ________ and asked ________. "__________ me, could you __________ us how to __________ to the Tower of Boston, _____?"
   "Go __________ blocks and __________ to your left." the man said __________. "You can't __________ it."
   So we __________ three blocks and turned to our __________, but the __________ wasn't there. We then asked a __________ stranger. "Excuse me, __________ do we __________ to the Tower of Boston?"
   "Go three _________  and turn to _________ left. You _________ miss it," the man _________ without any _________.
   But _________ we couldn't find the tower. _________ we asked a _________ stranger. "Excuse me, _________ is the Tower of Boston?"
   "_______ three blocks and turn ______ your left. _________ can't miss it," the man ______ unwittingly.
   This time we _____ the tower, but we _________ if everything in Boston was three blocks and a left turn ______. Just ______ somebody came ______ to us and said, "Excuse me, do you ________ where I can _______ some bread ______ here?"
   "Go three blocks _______ turn to your left," my brother said _______, "you can't miss ________."
