French president Francois Holland is calling the coordinated1 attacks on Paris claimed by the IS or hash an act of war. France will be pitilessly concerning the barbarity of the hash and use all its means in the framework of law. Holland heard through a CNN interpreter. The Paris public prosecutor2 says 7 attackers are dead and an American is among at least 129 people dead. NPR's PK has more from Paris. Public prosecutor Fran?ois Molins says the heavy death roll could still rise as dozens of the more than 350 wounded are in intense care. The prosecutors3 says the attackers were almost certainly coordinated with three teams using identical vehicles, ammunition4 and explosive belts. Two of the vehicles used were registered in Belgium by a man who was detained at the Belgium board along with two other men. Their residences near Brussels are being searched. Not all the evidences uncovered by investigators5 has been released in order to preserve the integrity of the investigation6. The French president has declared a state of emergency and three days of national mourning. PK, NPR news, Paris.

The Pentagon says a US airstrike may have killed a senior leader of the IS in Libya. The military says Abu Nabil was a Iraqi national and a longtime Al-Qaeda operative. In the statement, the Pentagon says it's the first US airstrike against an IS leader in Libya and says it would degrade the extremist's ability to recruit new members, establish bases in Libya and plan attacks on the US.
Kurdish fighters in Northern Iraq say they found a mass grave in an area recently retaken from the IS. IS had overrun Sinjar more than a year ago killing7 and capturing hundreds of its Yazidi residents. NPR's EF reports the bodies found in the mass grave were mostly those of women. A fighter from the minority Yazidi sect8 named HA tells NPR his men were moving into a Yazidi village south the town of Sinjar after this week's advances against IS. They saw the mass grave because the rains had washed away a thin layer of earth on top of it. They did not disturb the grave much but so decomposed9 bodies with long hair. A villager who escaped that massacre10 said that the grave held about 75 elderly women and that there were two more mass graves in the area. Yazidi fighters are leaving the graves untouched, hoping they will be properly documented and IS's actions declared a genocide. EF, NPR news, Sinjar.
The Israeli military says it has demolished11 four homes in the West Banks belonging to Palestinians who carried out deadly attacks. It says three of the attackers killed an Israeli couple in front of their children and Israeli military says the other homes were that of Palestinian who killed an Israeli on his way home from a basketball game. This is NPR.
Russia says it has reached an agreement with the International Olympics Committee that could allow Russian athletes to compete next summer in Rio de Janeiro. From Moscow, NPR's KF reports the deal follows accusations12 of state-sponsered doping. Russia's Athletics13 Federation14 was suspended because of a sport doping scandal. That means that Russia's track and field athletes will not be allowed to compete in any international events until the federation is reinstated. Those international events could include this summer's olympics game in Brazil. The head of Russia's Olympic Committee Alexander Zhukov has been put in charge of reforming the Athletics Federation, its Anti-doping Agency and its National Drug-testing Lab. IOC president Thomas Bach says he is confident Russia can make the needed reforms in time to compete this summer. KF, NPR news, Moscow.
And another tragedy in France today. A train that was being tested on a new high speed line from Paris to Strasbourg derailed near the German border. At least ten people were killed. Authorities say it burst into flames, spit apart and plunged15 into a canal. Officials say the derailment was due to excessive speed and appears to be an accident. Two major rock bands are canceling concerts in Paris after last night's attacks including one at a concert hall. U2 had Sold-out Houses this weekend. The Foo Fighters are cutting short their European tour. I'm BC, NPR news in Washington.
