Many delegates have walked out of a United Nations conference on racism1 held in Geneva, because of a speech in which the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called Israel a racist2 country. Mr. Ahmadinejad accused Israel of exploiting the Holocaust3 and the persecution4 of Jews to justify5 the creation of a racist government in occupied Palestine. He was applauded by a summoned conference hall. But the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was sharply critical.

I deplore6 the use of this platform by the Iranian President to accuse, divide and even incite7. This is the opposite of what this conference seeks to achieve. This makes it significantly more difficult to build constructive8 solutions to the very real problem of racism.

A demonstration9 in Madagascar against the closure of two radio stations has led to violent clashes between the security forces and hundreds of anti-government protesters, at least 2 people were killed and 30 others wounded by bullets. The protesters support the exiled president Marc Ravalomanana who was forced from power in March by his rival Andry Rajoelina. Johnny Hook reports from Antananarivo.

The fighting broke out after the security forces attempted to disperse10 a peaceful sitting outside the court buildings in the centre of the city. They initially11 used tear gas and detonators to drive back the crowds. But when protesters replied by throwing rocks, the military and police opened fire. The decision by the transitional authorities had to close two radio stations bears strong resemblance to former President Marc Ravalomanana's attempts to close Andry Rajoelina's radio station back in December which also sparked protests and eventually led to Mr. Ravalomanana being forced from the power.

She also said he'd asked her to keep quiet about the issue during last year's election campaign which he went on to win. President Barack Obama has defended his decision to release government papers relating to the treatment of terrorism suspects by the Central Intelligence Agency. Speaking to CIA staff at their headquarters, Mr. Obama said he had acted because American foreign policy was changing. He said the United States believed in the rule of law, unlike Al-Qaida which had no such constrains15.

What makes the United States special is precisely16 the fact that we're willing to uphold our values and our ideas even when it's hard, not just when it's easy; even when we're afraid and under threat. That's what makes us different.

美国之所以与众不同,正好是因为,尽管面对困难,我们还愿意支持我们的价值观和观念,而不仅仅是从容安逸时,甚至是害怕、面临威胁时也会这样。正是这使我们与众不同。
