The films Boyhood and The Theory of Everything have scooped1 the top prizes at the BAFTA Film Awards here in London. Our arts correspondent Vincent Dowd was at the ceremony at the Royal Opera House.
A classic film. He spent twelve years filming very roughly a week to ten days per year, following the lifeof a child as he went from roughly six to eighteen. So it’s the ultimate biopic. When I went along, I thought “Oh, well, this is going to be very enterprising. But will it be really drama?” And it absolutely fantastically is. Patricia Arquette is who I suppose the lead actress and she explained actually very well at the BAFTAS why this is such an unusual and important film.
This movie has done something no film has ever done before. You broke the rules of cinema. You broke history. You trusted all of us. And you made an ordinary story, extraordinary. You made a story about love. AndI love you. And I thank you.
Patricia Arquette, best supporting actress. There was a good night for The Theory of Everything, as well.
Yes, the biopic about Pro2. Stephen Hawking3. I should say perhaps the most extraordinary thing was that Hawking was there. But yes Eddie Redmayne got the best actor prize. I don’t think anyone was hugely surprised at that. I mean he is still quite young Eddie Redmayne. He is 32, 33. But he is the kind of a success that people like to encourage at the BAFTAS. So he is clearly going to go on to greater things. As I say, though, perhaps the event of the night for me at least was seeing Stephen Hawing progressing at the red carpet, of course in his wheelchair. It’s not the kind of thing you expect to see outside the Royal Opera House. And then later on, they had a bit of a theatric coup4 very well-organized of course. Felicity Jones, ofcourse, also stars in the film, actually introduced Stephen Hawking there on stage in the Royal Opera House.
It’s wonderful to be here this evening. And I am particularly pleased to be presenting this award with the only person on the planet more intelligent than Stephen Fry.
Yes, and better looking.
Stephen Fry of course is the highly intelligent and very witty5 compere6.
Well, were there any other surprises? I know that the best animated7 film was very popular.
