The British actress Charlotte Rampling has described a campaign to boycott1 this year’s Oscars because the absence of black nominees2 as racist3 against white people. She’s been nominated in the best actress category for her role in the film 45 Years. Our entertainment correspondent has the details.
One of the nominees Charlotte Rampling has spoken about the controversy4 to French radio network Europe 1. When asked if she understood the anger of people like director Spike5 Lee who’s decided6 to boycott the ceremony, she replied, “No, I think it’s the other way around that it’s racists against white people” . And the actress who’s been nominated for the film 45 Years suggested that perhaps no black actors merited being nominated.
You can never know for sure but maybe black actors didn’t deserve to be in the final selection. Why classify people? We live in countries now where people are more or less accepted.
But the organizers of the Oscars ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, have now said they will take steps to address the issue of diversity in Hollywood. Our correspondent in Los Angles James Cook told me more.
Nominees for Academy Awards are chosen by more than 6000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. And crucially, that group itself is overwhelmingly white, male and over the age of 50. So in response to that, pretty quickly this year, I mean, given that this is the second year in a row that we’ve had this row, there’ve been only white actress nominated for two years in a row, that the response this year has really been relatively7 quick.
And the Academy says that what it’s going to do is to try to double the number of woman and the number of what it calls “diverse”, which I think by which they mean nonwhite members of the Academy by 2020.
There will be some exceptions for the longest serving members for Oscar nominees, as well. But basically for people who have not been active in the industry for the past decade who don’t fall into those other categories, the Academy will strip them of their voting rights to try to make the membership reflect the United States and world better.
You think it will be enough to calm some of the anger, public anger?
I think it will go some way, yes, to calming the anger. People have been very very upset. We’ve seen actors and directors complaining, Spike Lee the director saying they were lily white.
