"Have you finished your lesson, George?" said Mr. Prentice to his son, who had laid aside his book and was busily engaged in making a large paper kite.

“乔治，你的功课做完了吗？”普伦蒂斯先生对他的儿子说。他儿子早放下了课本，正忙着用纸做一个大风筝。

"No, father," replied George, hanging down his head.

“没有，爸爸。”乔治垂下脑袋回答到。

"Why not, my son?"

“为什么不做完，儿子？”

"Because it is so difficult, father. I am sure that I shall never learn it. Besides, I could not remember it after I had learned¹ it, my memory is so bad."

“因为太难了，爸爸，我肯定永远学不会。而且，学完我也记不住，我的记性太差。”

"If I were to promise you a holiday on the thirtieth of the month after next, do you think you would forget the date?"

“如果我答应你下下个月的30号放假，你会忘记日期吗？”

"No, I am pretty sure that I should not."

“不，我确定不会忘记。”

"You are first-rate at skating, and flying your kite, and playing at ball and marbles, are you not?"

“滑冰、放风筝、打球、玩弹子游戏，你都很在行，不是吗？”

"Yes, father."

“是的，爸爸。”

"And yet you cannot learn your lesson! My dear boy, you are deceiving² yourself. You can learn as well as any one, if you will only try."

“但你却学不会你的课文！亲爱的儿子，你在骗自己。如果你愿意试试的话，你能学得和别人一样好。”

"But have I not tried, father?" again urged George.

“但我不是没试过吧，爸爸？”乔治再次辩解到。

"Well, try again. Come, for this afternoon lay aside that kite you are making, and give another effort to get your lesson ready.

“嗯，再试一次。来，今天下午放下你在做的风筝，再努力一次把功课做好。

Be in earnest³, and you will soon learn it. To show you that it only requires perseverance⁴, I will tell you a story:

认真一点，你很快就能学会。我给你讲一个故事，向你证明这只是需要坚持不懈而已：

"One of the dullest boys at a village school, more than thirty years ago, went up to repeat his lesson one morning; and, as usual, did not know it.

“三十多年前的一个早上，村中一所学校里最迟钝的一个男孩站起来复述课文；像往常一样，他不会。

'Go to your seat!' said the teacher angrily. 'If you don't pay more attention to your lessons you will never be fit for anything.'

‘回你的座位去！’老师生气地说。‘如果你不专心学功课，将一事无成。’”

"The poor boy stole off to his seat, and bent⁵ his eyes again upon his lesson."

“可怜的男孩悄悄地遛回座位，眼睛再次落到课文上。”

"It is of no use; I cannot learn, he said in a whisper to a companion who sat near him."

“这是没用的，我学不会，他对坐在旁边的同伴低声说。”

"You must try hard,' replied the kind-hearted boy."

“你一定要努力，善良的男孩回答。”

"I have tried, but it is of no use; I may just as well give up at once."

“我试过了，但没用；我还是马上放弃的好。”

"Try again, Henry! whispered his companion, in an earnest and encouraging tone⁶."

“再试一次，亨利！他的同伴用诚恳而又鼓舞人的语气低声说。”

1 learned   

adj.有学问的，博学的；learn的过去式和过去分词

2 deceiving   

v.欺骗，蒙骗( deceive的现在分词 )

3 earnest

4 perseverance   

n.坚持不懈，不屈不挠

参考例句：

• It may take some perseverance to find the right people.要找到合适的人也许需要有点锲而不舍的精神。
• Perseverance leads to success.有恒心就能胜利。

5 bent   

n.爱好，癖好；adj.弯的；决心的，一心的

参考例句：

• He was fully bent upon the project.他一心扑在这项计划上。
• We bent over backward to help them.我们尽了最大努力帮助他们。

6 tone   

n.语气，音调，气度，色调；vt.（up）增强

参考例句：

• There was a tone of mockery in his voice.他说话的语气含有嘲笑的意味。
