Original Sin: In the Thriller¹ Tradition

Moviegoers are getting set to be thrilled as sultry Angelina Jolie and Latin hunk Antonio Banderas steam up the screen in the new erotic thriller Original Sin. Set in late nineteenth-century Cuba, the film is sure to entice² audiences with its compelling cast, suspenseful⁴ plot, and exotic locale.

Antonio Banderas plays Luis, a wealthy coffee merchant looking for love. He corresponds with a mail-order bride who describes herself as "plain",but is pleasantly surprised to meet gorgeous Julia (Angelina Jolie) instead. After Luis's initial delight, he finds that his enigmatic new bride brings trouble. The newlyweds become entangled⁵ in desire, obsession⁶, and revenge in a story containing many dark twists and turns.

Audiences have loved movies that keep them on the edge of their seats since the all-time master of thrillers⁷, Alfred Hitchcock, made his first film in 1925. Designed to elicit⁸ intense excitement and nerve-racking tension, thrillers create suspense³ by placing the protagonist⁹ in a perilous¹⁰ situation from which escape seems impossible. The main character is often unknowingly lured¹¹ into this potentially lethal¹² predicament by a seductive femme fatale, as in Original Sin.

It remains¹³ to be seen whether or not Original Sin will become a thriller classic. But if you are looking for a good cliff-hanger, you might try some films voted among the best of the genre¹⁴ such as Psycho, North by Northwest, The French Connection, Rosemary's Baby, and Jaws¹⁵.

Angelina Jolie, daughter of Academy Award winner Jon Voight, uses her middle name to avoid leaning on her famous lineage. Jolie has no problem standing¹⁶ out on her own, though, with her sultry good looks, considerable acting¹⁷ ability, and personal quirks¹⁸.

Jolie began training as an actress at the prestigious¹⁹ Lee Strasberg Theater Institute at the age of eleven. However, it was only after working as a professional model and performing in music videos that she took the plunge²⁰ into film. She has worked steadily²¹ on the silver screen since 1993 in movies such as Without Evidence, Playing God, Gone in 60 Seconds, and Girl Interrupted, and seems to prefer roles that allow her to play up her sex appeal and gritty demeanor²². Her performances on the small screen have brought her the most critical acclaim²³, though, including two Golden Globe awards and two Emmy nominations²⁴.

There is a dark streak²⁵ that runs through Jolie. It was her childhood ambition to become a funeral director, and she has the Japanese word for "death" tattooed²⁶ on her shoulder. Jolie's first wedding saw her sporting a black rubber dress and her husband-to-be's name written on her back in blood. She and her current husband, actor/director Billy Bob Thornton, wear necklaces with vials containing each other's blood. Whatever her idiosyncrasies, Angelina Jolie continues to captivate audiences with films such as Original Sin and Tomb Raider.
