FBI Pulls Out of Yemen
David Gollust
State Department
18 Jun 2001 21:57 UTC
The 1)Federal Bureau of Investigation1 is 2)withdrawing its agents from Yemen who are 3)probing last October's terrorist bombing of a U.S. Navy destroyer in Aden. However the State Department says its employee, at the U.S. 4)embassy in the capital, Sanaa, will remain.
The contingent3 of U.S. investigators4 left Yemen over the weekend, following what the FBI says was a specific and credible5 5)threat made against its 6)personnel.
The FBI has been operating in Yemen since shortly after the October 12 bombing that killed 17 U.S. sailors and badly damaged the destroyer USS Cole, as it made a 7)refueling stop in Aden port.
The State Department earlier this month had issued an advisory6 calling on Americans to 8)defer travel to Yemen, because of what was described as an increased terrorist threat to U.S. citizens and interests there.
But briefing reporters, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said the decision to depart was that of the FBI alone. He said, "The FBI made a decision to leave Yemen based on what they saw as a 9)credible threat to their employees. They made the decision to withdraw their personnel from Yemen on June 17. Although our embassy is closed to the public, our embassy does remain open and our diplomats7 continue to do their jobs."
Mr. Boucher said there has been close cooperation between U.S. diplomatic security personnel and Yemeni authorities, and said local authorities have taken what he termed "extraordinary measures" to insure the safety of American officials in light of the 10)heightened threat.
A senior official here, speaking on condition he not be further identified, seemed to downplay the FBI's concerns - saying no one was forcing them to stay and that, "if they can't stand the heat they should get out of the kitchen."
U.S. officials have attributed the attack on the USS Cole to the terrorist organization of Osama Bin2 Laden8, the Saudi exile believed to be in Afghanistan.
In addition to the June 9 11)advisory on Yemen, the State Department late last month issued a world-wide 12)caution to American travelers about possible attacks by groups with links to Bin Laden.
