Some Serbian-Americans living in the Midwest U.S. city of Chicago say they are satisfied former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic will 1)tried for war crimes. But, some say they would have 2)preferred a trial in Serbia, and many worry the Serbian people will be tried along with Mr. Milosevic.
News that Mr. Milosevic had been transferred to officials of the United Nations war crimes 3)tribunal reached Chicago just a couple of hours before the daily "Serbian Radio Chicago" program on a local station here. It was among the program's top stories.
At least 50,000 Serbian 4)immigrants and Serbian-Americans live in the Chicago area. They staged large and loud 5)protests in the city while NATO planes bombed the former Yugoslavia two years ago during the Kosovo conflict. But Serbian National Foundation Vice1 President Louis Milicich says many agree Mr. Milosevic should be put 6)on trial. "The man who many people once viewed as a hope for Serbia, but who showed himself to be, in fact, Serbia and the Serbian people's greatest enemy, will be tried by the international community," he says.
Desko Nikitovic of the Chicago Serbian Unity2 Congress agrees Mr. Milosevic should be tried by the United Nations, but he wishes the former Yugoslav leader could first be tried in his home country. "I would like to see the Serbian 7)judiciary first being reformed and then, that kind of judiciary should be capable to put Milosevic on trial," he says.
Louis Milicich says many Serbians living in the United States are concerned that the Serbian people will, in effect, be on trial when 8)proceedings begin against Mr. Milosevic. "Although many of its sons and daughters may have made errors and committed crimes during the last 10 years, the primary responsibility lies with Milosevic and the Communist 9)clique that ran the country," he says.
Still, Mr. Nikitovic says putting Mr. Milosevic on trial will be good for the future of the former Yugoslavia. "Definitely, because this is really a bad piece of history that he 10)represented and that we have to overcome, and we are not going to overcome it until he is physically3 removed from the country or he is in prison or in jail," he says.
Mr. Nikitovic is hopeful an international 11)donors' conference Friday in Belgium will help generate4 the foreign aid Yugoslavia needs to rebuild its economy.
