Israel is mobilizing extra tanks and troops in the West Bank in response to a sharp 1)escalation of violence in the 10 month old 2)conflict with the Palestinians. Israeli officials are saying this does not mean there will be an 3)invasion of areas under Palestinian control.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon convened1 a meeting of top security officials [Wednesday] to discuss the increase in bloodshed. Israel radio reported the ministers approved additional steps to combat the violence, but did not 4)elaborate.
The meeting came as military 5)reinforcements took up positions in the West Bank. Army sources say the military is moving infantry2 and armed vehicles into the area after Palestinians fired mortar3 shells on a Jewish community 6)adjacent to Jerusalem.
The military 7)buildup is being described as the largest since the Palestinian intifada, or uprising, began last September.
Shimon Peres Speaking to reporters in London, Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said there are no plans to 8)reoccupy land under Palestinian control. "Contrary to the reports, we do not intend to reconquer, so to speak, the territories."
Mr. Peres said both sides need to return to the path of peace. "I don't believe that this is a lost case," the Israeli Foreign Minister said. "We should not give up 9)in the face of the bombs and the shooting and the threats because none of us has another or a better alternative."
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, speaking in Cairo, condemned4 the military buildup.
Other Palestinians called the move 10)provocative, saying it could push a 11)fragile situation to the edge of an 12)explosion.
The mortar attack near Jerusalem followed an 13)assault by Israeli combat 14)helicopters that killed four Palestinians in Bethlehem, including members of the militant5 group Hamas.
Israel says they were planning a major terrorist attack at the Maccabiah games, a Jewish sporting event currently underway at various sites throughout the country.
Palestinians called the strike an 15)assassination and called again for international intervention6 to end the conflict.
