West Bank Funeral Sparks Renewed Calls For Mideast Monitors

Thousands of Palestinians 1)poured out their 2)grief and anger at the funeral of a three-month-old baby in the West Bank Friday. The youngest 3)victim of the Palestinian uprising against Israel that began last September was wrapped in a Palestinian flag and carried through the West Bank city of Hebron to his home. His death has led to renewed calls for international observers to be sent to monitor the violence.
Many in the funeral procession called out 4)curses against Jewish settlers and demanded 5)revenge.
The baby and two other Palestinians died Thursday in a hail of bullets fired by suspected Jewish 6)extremists. Four others were injured.
Avni Pazner, a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, says that Israel is committed to 7)hunting down the 8)perpetrators and bringing them to justice.
"We strongly condemn1 this wanton and 9)murderous act of terror," he said. "We send our heart-felt 10)condolences to the family, we feel for them. We will do whatever we can in order to find those who committed this murderous act, to find them, to bring them to justice, so that they can be punished accordingly."
Yehudit Tayar, with the Jewish Settlers Council, also condemned2 the killing3 and says that her movement is against all such acts of violence.
"Whether it is Arab or Jew, we condemn any death and call on those who are supposed to bring law and order, the police, the military, and bring to justice anybody who dare murder anybody," he said.
Palestinian officials hold Israel responsible for the attack and have stepped up their calls for international observers. Cabinet Minister Nabil Shaath says there are what he calls Israeli terrorists responsible for killing Palestinians.
"The Israeli government knows of a vast network of terrorist Israeli organizations, particularly manned by terrorists from the settler community in the West Bank and Gaza, that has been terrorizing, killing, 11)sniping, shooting at Palestinians, killing women and children, babes in the mothers' arms, while passing the roads," he said.
Israeli Defense4 Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer says that there can be no 12)justification for such acts of terror. He says that the people who carried out the killings5 are no better than members of militant6 Islamic groups, who have been targeting Israelis.
"What happened last night is the worst of the worst; a terror, terror that has been made against innocent people," he said. "A child is a child. A woman is a woman. And there is no excuse for the murderous action. And, for me, there are no differences between this and Hamas or Jihad activity."
While the 13)identity of the 14)attackers remains7 unknown, Mr. Ben-Eliezer clearly pointed8 the finger at Jewish 15)extremists. He says that most Jewish settlers in the West Bank and Gaza Strip are peace loving people but their lives have now been placed at risk because of these latest killings.
"No doubt about it. Those who did it should know that 16)innocent settlers, who are the majority, if not all of them, are against what happened yesterday night," he said. "They are going to suffer, there is no doubt about that."
Mr. Ben-Eliezer says that such actions do not justify9 the Palestinian demand for international observers to be sent to the region. The Israeli Defense Minister says he is against such a force.
However, Mr. Ben-Eliezer says if outside observers are imposed on Israel, the only ones that he would possibly accept are members of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.
