Chapter1 Three“Here we are, Madam.” The big black car stopped, and a police2 officer3 opened the back door.
“Thank you.” Helen sent back a smile at him as4 she got5 out. Another police officer opened the front door of her house. Inside6 her house it was7 quiet. Her daughter was reading8. She put the book down. “Hello! Mammy! You are late. You said9 you’ll be home by ten o’clock. I wanted to talk to you about my homework, remember?” Helen sat10 down. “I’m sorry, Sara. I did11 remember really. But I had12 a very busy day. Anyway13, I’m home now. What’s the problem14?”
“It’s this book,” said Sara, “I have to write about it at school on Friday. But I don’t understand it.”
“Alright,” said Helen, “Bring the book into the kitchen and I’ll look at it while15 you make me a cup of coffee.” They sat in the kitchen and talked for nearly16 half an hour. Then Helen looked at her watch. “OK, Sara. That’s enough for now. It’s nearly midnight17 and I must be up at six tomorrow. I’m going18 to bed. Good night!” Alone19 in her bedroom, she undressed and got into the big empty bed. She was very tired. She closed20 her eyes. And in three minutes, she was asleep21. The phone rang at 12:15 a.m. Helen groaned23 and picked24 it up. “Hello! What? Who? Tell me what time it is!” She ran22 her hand through her hair and turned the light on. “Now? I don’t believe25 it! Are you sure?” The voice26 on the telephone explained27 carefully28. Helen groaned again and sat up. “I hope29 it is serious30. If it isn’t, somebody31 is going to be in a big trouble32. Yes! Alright! Send a car in fifteen minutes then and bring me some coffee. Goodbye!” She put the phone down and got out of the bed. Outside the window she could33 hear a strong wind blowing.
Twenty minutes later34, she was sitting in the back of her black big car, drinking a cup of coffee and talking to the chief35 airport police on the car telephone. It was raining heavily36.
