Meanwhile, on Svalbard, a kittiwake colony brings hope to the hungry mother and cub³. They can't reach the nests, but there is still food to be had. Grass is the bears' emergency rations⁴ and it flourishes wherever bird droppings provide fertilizer. It provides little real nourishment⁵, but it helps stop hunger pangs⁶. But to survive the bears will need protein. 

 

In comparison, the ice bears have it easy, but the rising summer temperatures can cramp⁷ a hunter's style. He's tracking bearded seals--an ambitious quarry⁸. She has battle scars from a previous bear encounter. It won't be easy. The bear has two to choose from, the odds⁹ are good. But he's treading on thin ice. He spreads his legs to distribute his weight and progresses carefully.
